ETF Trading Costs Beyond Commissions

A full-cost framework for choosing a fund, a broker, and an order—not just the lowest commission headline.

Commission is only one line of ETF ownership cost

ETF investors usually see a fund expense ratio and a brokerage commission first. Neither number captures the full implementation cost. Spread, premium or discount, market impact, currency conversion, taxes, margin, market data, and the cost of replacing an existing holding can be larger than a small annual fee difference.

Premium or discountCompare market price with estimated net asset value or intraday indicative value.Stressed markets or products with less-liquid holdings.
CurrencyConversion rate, spread, commission, and frequency.International accounts and foreign-exchange trading.
Tax and switchingRealized gain or loss, wash-sale considerations, and account-specific treatment.Replacing an existing taxable holding.

A $50,000 example

Suppose Fund A costs 0.03% and Fund B costs 0.09%. The annual expense difference on $50,000 is about $30. If switching creates a $50 spread cost, a $25 transfer or commission cost, and a taxable gain, the first-year decision may not favor the lower fee. Over a longer holding period, the recurring fee difference becomes more important. The correct comparison uses the expected holding period and every material one-time cost.
