ETF Brokerage Comparison: A Cost and Account-Fit Worksheet
A broker comparison method that begins with account fit and total cost instead of a promotional headline.
A broker comparison method that begins with account fit and total cost instead of a promotional headline.
A broker comparison is meaningful only after the account is defined. Record residence, tax status, account registration, base currency, expected funding method, markets, ETF types, average order size, trading frequency, need for advice, and support preferences. The same broker can be a strong fit for one profile and a poor fit for another.
| Decision area | Evidence to collect | Failure to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Legal entity | Customer agreement, regulator, custody, complaint route, and protection description. | Assuming a global brand means every resident receives the same entity and terms. |
| Eligibility | Residence list, tax forms, minimum age, account type, and required identity or address evidence. | Using a borrowed or inaccurate address to reach a product that is not offered. |
| ETF trading | Commission schedule, regulatory and exchange fees, routing, fractional-share rules, and complex-product permission. | Comparing only the word “free.” |
| Foreign markets | Exchange access, custody charges, currency conversion, market data, and settlement. | Ignoring recurring currency and data charges. |
| Cash and margin | Cash treatment, interest conditions, margin rate tiers, maintenance rules, and liquidation rights. | Comparing borrowing cost without the forced-sale rules. |
| Transfers | ACATS or local transfer support, outgoing fees, closure fees, fractional shares, and unsupported assets. | Discovering after opening that the current portfolio cannot move in kind. |
| Service | Support hours, channels, platform reliability, statements, beneficiaries, and estate procedures. | Treating platform features as more important than access to help during a problem. |
Build one cost scenario using the actual number and size of purchases, sales, currency conversions, options contracts, data subscriptions, outgoing transfers, and average margin debit. Keep bid-ask spread and ETF operating expenses separate from broker charges so the same fund and order can be compared consistently.
When practical, begin with a small transfer. Confirm deposit, purchase, statement, tax-lot display, withdrawal, security controls, and support. A small live test can reveal account-name mismatches, funding delays, unfamiliar order settings, or document problems before they affect a large balance.
Interactive Brokers deserves attention when multi-market access, currencies, order controls, or pricing-plan choice matters. Charles Schwab may be considered by eligible clients who value its U.S. account ecosystem, platforms, service model, and current transfer or referral terms. This page does not declare a universal winner.
