What to compare before opening a Schwab account

Charles Schwab offers U.S. brokerage and retirement accounts, ETF access, trading platforms, fixed-income products, and banking-related services. Availability and account terms depend on residence and account type. A promotion should come after the account decision, not before it.

AreaWhat to verify
EligibilityResidence, taxpayer identification, account type, required documents, and whether the application is handled by the U.S. or international business.
TradingOnline ETF commission schedule, contract fees where relevant, order execution disclosures, and charges for broker-assisted activity.
CashHow uninvested cash is held, any sweep option, rates, and whether a separate bank product is involved.
TransfersOutgoing transfer and closure charges, treatment of fractional shares, and whether every asset can move in kind.
PlatformsWhether the web, mobile, and thinkorswim tools match the intended frequency and complexity of trading.

How the public referral offer works

Schwab's official referral page states that the qualifying new client—not the referring website—can receive an award after using an eligible referral code and making a qualifying net deposit. The published tiers checked on October 24, 2026 were:

Qualifying net depositPublished award
$500,000 or more$1,000
$100,000 to $499,999$500
$50,000 to $99,999$300
$25,000 to $49,999$100

The official page says the qualifying net deposit must be made within 45 days after enrollment. For taxable accounts, the qualifying amount generally must remain for at least one year, less market losses, or the award may be charged back. The offer is limited to U.S. residents, is not combinable with other offers, and excludes Investor Checking and several other account types. Schwab can change or end the offer, so the current official terms must be read before opening or transferring an account.

The $1,000 headline in context

A $1,000 award on a $500,000 transfer equals 0.20% before tax and before any transfer cost, cash drag, or lost benefits at the old broker. That may be worthwhile for an account that already fits, but it is not large enough to rescue a poor platform, service, tax, or investment decision. Use the break-even calculator with the exact holding period and costs.
