Broker Transfer Bonus Requirements: Net Value Checklist

How to turn a broker bonus headline into a realistic after-cost decision.

A transfer bonus has three separate tests

First, the applicant and account must be eligible. Second, the qualifying assets must arrive by the deadline and remain for any required maintenance period. Third, the award must exceed taxes, transfer costs, investment disruption, and the value of benefits lost at the old broker.

Read the definition of qualifying assets

Offers may use net deposits rather than gross deposits. Withdrawals during the measurement window can reduce the credited amount. Internal transfers, assets from affiliated firms, existing-client money, or unsupported assets may be excluded. Save the official terms and identify the exact enrolled account before sending money.

Transfer mechanics can change the result

An in-kind transfer may preserve positions and tax lots, but fractional shares, proprietary funds, options, margin loans, or unsupported securities may require separate handling. A transfer can also temporarily limit trading. Compare the sending broker's outgoing fee, the receiving broker's reimbursement rules, and the risk of being unable to act during the move.

Calculate the net value

Begin with the advertised award. Subtract transfer and closure fees, estimated tax, lost interest or benefits, and the opportunity cost of cash that must remain uninvested. If assets must stay for a year, include the value of any account feature or investment flexibility surrendered during that year. A large dollar award can represent a small percentage of a large required balance.

Use the calculator for a transparent estimate. Then read the official terms again immediately before opening the account.

Questions to settle before the transfer starts

Ask the receiving broker whether the offer applies to a full account transfer, a partial transfer, cash deposits, retirement accounts, or only selected account types. Ask the delivering broker which assets cannot move in kind. Fractional shares, proprietary mutual funds, options close to expiration, restricted securities, and unsettled trades may need separate handling. A transfer can stall when an account registration, taxpayer name, or address differs between firms.

Save the offer terms that were displayed when you enrolled, along with the enrollment confirmation and funding deadline. After the assets arrive, confirm the credited value used by the broker and the date on which the maintenance period ends. If the award is missing, a dated record makes a support request easier to resolve.
